This device works via GPS mobile phone technology to help relatives or carers track and monitor the location of a person who is prone to wandering outside the house, for example, due to dementia. It is useful to use for a person living independently or living with a carer/relative, but who cannot be constantly supervised. Using the tracking device gives carers peace of mind.
The Tracker requires a mobile telephone SIM card (not included) to be inserted prior to use, and up to five family, friend or carer mobile telephone numbers to be programmed.
It is a fairly small device, with black plastic casing. It has a hole to fit a lanyard through, can be attached to a belt clip, or placed in the person's bag or pocket.
The five nominated people simply send an instruction via SMS text message from their mobile phone, to the number of the SIM card in the Tracker, in order to receive back a text message detailing the location of the person. The response message includes map co-ordinates and a link to Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk). The location data is sent to all five telephone numbers, regardless of which person requested the information.
It's also possible to set up 'safe zones', which are areas where the carer feels it safe for the person to walk to, for example, the local shop or a neighbour's house. If the person with the Tracker wanders outside the safe zone, each of the nominated people will be alerted by text message.
There is also an emergency button on the front of the Tracker, which the person can press in an emergency for 3 seconds to make contact urgently. The five people will receive an SOS message with location information every 3 minutes until someone replies with a set response message.
The Tracker allows two-way conversation similar to a mobile phone, enabling the person to contact and communicate directly, with the five key people in an emergency. The Tracker will also receive incoming calls.
The Tracker also has an integral fall sensor which senses the change in gravity that occurs during a fall. If this happens, a text message alert with mapping details will be sent to all authorised phones. The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted.
A comprehensive user manual is supplied with the Tracker, which details the text message instructions for nominated people to use, to carry out each required function. The Tracker also comes with a Charger Unit, Adaptor and Mini USB Connector. Supplied with 2 x 800mA batteries.
